What Students Need to Do

Students use shared traits, such as cell type, number of cells, and food source, to place organisms in nested groups. They compare kingdom characteristics and explain how members contribute to ecosystems.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given an unfamiliar organism profile, a student identifies its likely kingdom and supports the choice with at least two traits. The student orders taxonomic levels from broad to specific and explains roles such as digestion, decomposition, or production.

Common Misconceptions

Students may group organisms by appearance alone, call fungi plants, or assume all bacteria cause disease. They may also reverse broad and specific taxonomic levels or treat kingdoms as ecosystem roles rather than classification groups.

How to Assess It

Give an exit ticket with three organism profiles. Students name each likely kingdom, underline two deciding traits, and explain one organism’s ecosystem role.

   Give pairs organism cards and a trait chart; students sort them into kingdoms, then defend two placements with visible traits.

   Ask, “Why are fungi not plants, and what would happen to a forest without them?” Students answer with two traits and one ecosystem effect.

   Run a taxonomy relay where teams order level cards, classify organism clues, and earn a point only when they cite supporting evidence.
