What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students trace energy changes through a system, such as chemical energy in a battery becoming electrical energy and then light. They build complete circuits that produce motion, light, sound, or heat. They show that light travels straight until it is reflected, refracted, or absorbed.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can build a working circuit and identify the battery, closed path, conductors, and output device. They can label each energy change in a flashlight or circuit. They can draw accurate light paths through mirrors, water, and dark materials.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a battery stores electrical energy rather than chemical energy. They may expect a circuit to work with a gap or only one wire connected. They often confuse refraction with reflection or think light curves before reaching a material.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw a complete circuit that makes a buzzer sound, and label the energy changes. Add light rays meeting a mirror, water, and black paper, then label each result.

Ways to Teach It
Shine a flashlight at a mirror, cup of water, and black paper, then trace and label reflection, refraction, and absorption.
Write how energy changes in a flashlight, naming the chemical, electrical, and light energy in order.
