3.8 is a TEKS knowledge and skills statement. These are the student expectations under it.

What Students Need to Do

Students identify light, sound, thermal, and mechanical energy in familiar objects and events. They plan a fair test and use observations to connect an object's speed with its mechanical energy.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly label energy forms in examples such as lamps, drums, warm pavement, and rolling balls. They keep test conditions the same, record speed data, and explain that the faster identical object has more mechanical energy.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think energy means only electricity or that sound is not a form of energy. They may assume heavier objects are always faster or change several test conditions at once.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Label the energy in a flashlight, ringing bell, warm sidewalk, and rolling ball. Then compare identical cars moving at 1 m/s and 3 m/s, and explain which has more mechanical energy.

   Release identical toy cars from two ramp heights, time each over one meter, then compare how far each pushes a paper cup.

   Ask students to explain how speed affected each car's ability to move the cup, using measurements as evidence.

   Play an energy sort with picture cards showing lamps, instruments, hot food, fans, bicycles, and moving playground equipment.

   Walk around the playground and record one example each of light, sound, thermal, and mechanical energy.
