Texas TEKS 2.8

2.8 is a TEKS knowledge and skills statement. These are the student expectations under it.

  demonstrate and explain that sound is made by vibrating matter and that vibrations can be caused by a variety of means, including sound

  explain how different levels of sound are used in everyday life such as a whisper in a classroom or a fire alarm

  design and build a device using tools and materials that uses sound to solve the problem of communicating over a distance.

What Students Need to Do

Students show how plucking, striking, blowing, or nearby sound can make matter vibrate. They compare sound levels and choose a level that fits a setting. They build a simple device that sends sound across a distance.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can identify the vibrating part of an object and explain how the vibration produces sound. The student can justify using a whisper, speaking voice, or alarm and build a working communication device.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think sound comes only from voices or electronics. They may believe quiet sounds have no vibration or that loud sounds always travel farther. They may not connect a loose string in a cup phone with poor sound transfer.

How to Assess It

On an exit ticket, have students draw a cup phone, label the vibrating parts, and explain why the string must stay tight. Ask them to name one setting for a quiet sound and one for a loud sound.

   Stretch rubber bands over a box, then have students pluck, strike, and blow across them while observing and describing the vibrations.

   Ask students to compare a classroom whisper, a speaking voice, and a fire alarm, then write why each sound level fits its setting.

   Play Sound Sort with picture cards, asking teams to group sounds by how vibrations begin and whether each sound should be quiet or loud.

   Build cup phones with string and paper cups, then test communication at three distances and record when words are easiest to understand.
