What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify ways people use heat, such as cooking food and drying clothes. They observe changes caused by heat and decide whether each change can be reversed.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain that melted butter can cool and become solid again. They can also explain why a cooked egg or baked cake cannot return to its original form.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every heated object can return to its original form after cooling. They may also confuse heat with objects that produce heat, such as ovens or dryers.

How to Assess It

Show pictures of melted butter and a cooked egg. Ask students to circle the change that can be reversed and explain their choice in one sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place sealed cups of butter in warm and cool water, then have students draw and label each change.

  2. Show a raw egg and a cooked egg, then ask students to explain why cooking cannot be undone.

  3. Students sort picture cards into can be reversed and cannot be reversed, then check answers with a partner.

  4. Have students find three uses of heat in a kitchen or laundry room picture and explain what each one does.
