What Students Need to Do: Students observe how heat changes food, water, or wet fabric. They describe why people use heat for tasks such as cooking and drying clothes.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students name several everyday uses of heat and explain what the heat does. They can use an observation, such as butter softening or fabric drying, as evidence.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think heat is used only for cooking. They may credit only the dryer's spinning motion for drying clothes or assume every heat source is safe to touch.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: “Draw one way people use heat at home. Write or tell what the heat does.”

Lesson moves

Place sealed butter pats in warm and room-temperature water, then compare softness while the teacher controls the water temperature.
Ask, “Why do people use heat when cooking or drying clothes, and what change does the heat cause?”
Sort picture cards into “uses heat” and “does not use heat,” then have students explain each choice to a partner.
Students make a home heat-use map showing an oven, toaster, dryer, or water heater and label each job.
