What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students carry out simple tests that show how heat moves through direct contact, moving fluids, and electromagnetic waves. They track whether thermal energy enters or leaves a chosen system and use evidence to name the transfer method.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly identify conduction, convection, and radiation in an unfamiliar situation. They draw arrows showing energy moving from warmer matter to cooler matter and support each label with an observation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think cold moves into an object or that objects contain heat as a substance. They may also confuse convection with rising heat, or believe radiation requires air and only comes from the Sun.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw and label how thermal energy moves in a pot of water on a hot stove, including one example of each transfer method.

Ways to Teach It
Run three stations: spoons in warm water, food coloring in water heated below, and black versus white cards under a lamp.
Ask students to explain how a campfire warms a hand without contact and why smoke rises above the fire.
Teams sort scenario cards into conduction, convection, or radiation, then defend one difficult choice using evidence from the card.
Have students inspect an insulated lunch bag and sketch how its materials reduce conduction, convection, and radiation.
