What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe how energy moves from one object or place to another. They use collisions, water ripples, and vibrations to identify the source, receiver, and evidence of transfer.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can draw arrows showing where energy starts and where it goes. They can explain the transfer using evidence such as movement, ripples, vibration, or sound.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think water travels across a container with a wave, rather than moving mostly up and down. They may also confuse force with energy or think sound can travel without vibrating matter.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw a drum being struck, then label the energy source, receiver, direction of transfer, and one piece of evidence.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Set up stations with colliding marbles, a cork in a ripple tray, and a tuning fork touching water; students record transfer evidence.
Ask, "What moved from the source to the receiver, and what evidence proves it?" Students answer for one demonstration.
Students sort picture cards into moving objects, water waves, or sound, then draw an arrow from each energy source to its receiver.
Students choose a doorbell, ocean buoy, or bowling ball collision and diagram where energy starts, travels, and causes change.
