What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students test pushes and pulls on an object and observe changes in speed, direction, or position. They compare balanced and unbalanced force setups and explain where energy moves.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students predict an object's motion from the size and direction of the forces. They use observations or measurements to explain changes in motion and energy transfer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think equal forces always stop an object or that a moving object needs a constant forward force. They may also confuse force with energy or ignore force direction.
How to Assess It
- Give students a diagram of a cart pulled left with 3 N and right with 7 N. Ask them to predict its motion and explain the energy transfer.

Attach spring scales to both ends of a toy cart, apply equal and unequal pulls, then record direction and distance traveled.
Ask students to explain why a tied tug-of-war rope stays still even while both teams pull hard.
