What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students predict how heating or cooling will change a substance. They observe the change, record evidence, and name the starting and ending states of matter.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly predict melting, freezing, evaporation, and condensation in familiar examples. They use labeled drawings or tables to show the change and identify heating or cooling as the cause.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think melting and dissolving are the same process. They may think droplets on a cold glass leak through it, or that visible steam is water vapor.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw what happens to an ice cube on a warm plate and to water vapor near a cold glass. Label each state and cause.

Ways to Teach It
Place equal ice cubes in sunny and shaded spots, then have students predict, time, and record the melting in a table.
Ask students to explain where water droplets on a cold can come from and what evidence supports their answer.
Sort picture cards showing melting, freezing, evaporation, and condensation, then match each change with heating or cooling.
Track a playground puddle for two days, recording its size and connecting any change to sunlight, temperature, and evaporation.
