What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students build a closed circuit with a power source, wires, and an output device. They show how electrical energy produces motion, light, sound, or heat.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can assemble and label a working circuit, then explain why each part is needed. The student can identify the energy output from a bulb, motor, buzzer, or heating element.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think electricity leaves the battery through one wire without returning. They may also confuse the device with the energy output, such as naming a bulb instead of light.
How to Assess It
- Give students a battery, wires, and a bulb, then ask them to make the bulb light. Have them sketch the circuit and label the source, path, device, and energy output.

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations where students connect batteries and wires to a bulb, motor, buzzer, and steel wool, then record each energy output.
Ask students to explain why a bulb stays off when one wire is disconnected and what change would make it light.
Play Circuit Repair by giving teams flawed circuit diagrams to correct and classify by light, sound, motion, or heat output.
Inspect a flashlight, doorbell, fan, or toaster diagram and trace how electrical energy changes into an observable output.
