What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Track energy into, within, and out of a defined system. Identify when energy moves between objects or changes form, while accounting for energy that becomes thermal energy.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can label an energy flow diagram for a circuit, food web, or roller coaster. They explain each transfer or change without claiming energy appeared or disappeared.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may say energy is used up, created by batteries, or lost when motion stops. They may also confuse energy transfer with a change from one energy form to another.
How to Assess It
- Give students a diagram of a roller coaster descending a hill. Ask them to label the energy changes and explain where some energy goes due to friction.

Ways to Teach It
Build a battery, wire, and bulb circuit, then diagram how energy moves and changes as the bulb lights and warms.
Write an explanation answering, “Where does the energy go when a moving bicycle stops?” using motion, sound, and thermal energy.
Sort event cards into energy transfer, energy transformation, or both, then defend each choice to a partner.
Trace the energy used to charge a phone, from its original source to stored chemical energy and released thermal energy.
