What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use observations, measurements, and models to explain what happened and suggest a solution. They share their thinking clearly, listen to classmates, and point out evidence that supports an idea.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student makes a clear claim, supports it with recorded data, and uses a labeled drawing or model to clarify the explanation. The student identifies evidence in a classmate’s explanation and responds respectfully.

Common Misconceptions

Students may give an opinion or repeat a result without explaining how the evidence supports it. They may treat models as decorations or propose solutions unrelated to the data. Some listen only to agree or disagree, rather than identify evidence.

How to Assess It

Give students results from two paper towel absorbency tests. Ask, “Which towel should clean a spill, and what evidence supports your choice?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Test two paper bridge designs with counters, record the results, then draw and label a stronger design based on the data.

  2. Ask, “Which material kept an ice cube coldest, and what evidence would convince a classmate?”

  3. Play Evidence Match by pairing claim cards with observation, measurement, or model cards that support each claim.

  4. Inspect a classroom area for wasted paper, count examples, and propose a solution supported by the class data.
