What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain what happened during an investigation or how a design solves a problem. They share their thinking through speaking, writing, drawings, labels, or models.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student gives a clear claim and supports it with an observation or test result. The student can explain ideas alone and contribute useful details to a group response.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may retell the steps without explaining the result. They may give an opinion without evidence or copy a classmate’s idea during group work.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to draw and label one result from today’s investigation, then explain it to a partner. Check for an accurate result and one supporting observation.

Ways to Teach It
Pairs build a foil boat, test it with pennies, then use a labeled drawing to explain why it floated or sank.
Students answer the prompt, “Which material kept the ice coldest?” and support their response with one observation from the class test.
Play Explain It Three Ways, where students draw, speak, and write about the same investigation result.
Students examine a photo of a littered playground and create a poster explaining one practical solution.
