What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify whether an object can be described by its length, weight, or capacity. They compare two objects directly and tell which has more or less of that attribute.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students name an attribute that can be compared, such as length, weight, or capacity. They directly compare two objects and correctly say longer, shorter, heavier, lighter, holds more, or holds less.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse size with weight and assume the taller object is always heavier. They may compare lengths without lining up one end, or judge capacity by container height alone.
How to Assess It
- Show a pencil and a crayon, then ask: “Which is longer, and how can you prove it?” Have students align the ends and answer aloud.

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations where students align classroom objects, use a balance scale, and pour cups of rice between containers.
Ask, “Can a small object be heavier than a large object?” Have students explain with an example.
Play Attribute Sort by having students draw object cards, choose length, weight, or capacity, and compare the pictured pair.
Compare two lunch containers to decide which holds more, then test by filling each with the same scoop.
