What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly act out and draw joining or separating situations. They solve sums and differences within 10. They explain how their objects, drawing, and number sentence match the story.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose an operation from the numbers instead of the story action. They may count the objects removed rather than those left. Drawings may not match the number sentence.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Mia has 6 blocks and gives away 2. Draw what happens, write a number sentence, and explain your answer.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs counters and story cards. Students act out each story, draw it, and write the matching number sentence.
Ask, “How did you know whether to add or subtract?” Have students explain using their drawing and counters.
Play Change the Train: build five cubes, draw an add or take-away card, change the train, and state the new total.
Set up a snack problem with crackers, such as three on a plate and two added, then solve it before snack time.
