What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to short joining and separating stories. They use counters or quick drawings to show what happens, then count to find the answer.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student decides whether to put groups together or take objects away without a cue. The model matches the quantities and action in the story. The student counts accurately and explains the answer in context.
Common Misconceptions
- Some students add every time, even when objects are removed. Others count the starting group but forget to include added objects or cross out removed ones. They may give a number without connecting it to the story.
How to Assess It
- Use an exit ticket with two stories: “Mia has 4 blocks and gets 3 more. How many now?” and “Leo has 8 grapes and eats 2. How many remain?” Students draw each story and write or say each answer.
