What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students calculate with positive and negative integers, fractions, and decimals. They select and use operations in context, then explain why their answers and signs make sense.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately calculate with integers, fractions, and decimals, including negative values. They choose suitable operations for multistep problems and check answers using estimation or inverse operations.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often add absolute values and attach a guessed sign. They may treat subtraction of a negative as subtraction, invert the wrong fraction when dividing, or misplace decimal points.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Compute −3.5 + 1.2, 4.8 − (−2.7), (−3/4)(8/9), and (−5/6) ÷ (10/9). Students choose one answer and explain its sign.

Ways to Teach It
Use red and black counters to model signed number operations, then have students write the matching equations.
Ask students to explain why dividing two negative numbers gives a positive result, using an example and an inverse operation.
Run a card-matching game where students pair rational number expressions with answers, estimates, and operation rules.
Give students a weekly bank account record with deposits, withdrawals, and fees, then have them calculate and explain the final balance.
