What Students Need to Do
- Students make sense of real situations, choose a plan and suitable tools, solve, and check the result. They represent their reasoning in more than one way and explain it with precise math language.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the question and relevant information, then choose a useful strategy and tool. They show their thinking with equations, tables, diagrams, graphs, or words and check whether the result makes sense.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often choose an operation from a keyword without considering the whole situation. They may use every number given, trust a calculator result without estimating, or give an unlabeled answer with no justification.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A $48 jacket is 25% off. Find the sale price, show two representations, and explain why your answer is reasonable.”
