What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students ask a question about a topic and follow a simple plan with teacher support. They find information in books, pictures, videos, or conversations. They explain what they learned using speech, drawings, writing, or a mix of formats.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student asks a clear question, follows a simple teacher-made plan, and uses more than one source. The student identifies facts that answer the question. The student presents the answer through a drawing, labels, speech, or a simple digital slide.

Common Misconceptions

Students may share any interesting fact instead of answering their chosen question. They may think one book is enough or copy words without understanding them. They may draw a picture but cannot explain what it shows or name where the information came from.

How to Assess It

Show two short sources about penguins. Ask students to draw one fact that answers, “How do penguins stay warm?” and explain which source helped.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up an animal inquiry table with a photo book, short video, and models, then have students draw one fact they learn.

  2. Ask, “What do you wonder about butterflies?” Record questions, then let students choose one and draw where they might find an answer.

  3. Play Source Match by pairing question cards, such as “What do frogs eat?”, with a book, video, photo, or classroom expert.

  4. Research the best class snack by checking package labels, asking classmates, and presenting a picture graph with one spoken conclusion.
