What Students Need to Do: Students ask a simple question and use books, pictures, videos, objects, or people to find answers. With adult help, they name or record facts from more than one source.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a class question, a student can use two different sources and tell one relevant fact from each. The student can say where each fact came from.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat a guess as a fact or share details unrelated to the question. They may think only books count as sources, or forget which source provided a fact.
How to Assess It: Show a page about frogs and a 30-second frog video. Ask each student to tell one fact from each and name where it came from.

Lesson moves

Set out a nonfiction book, labeled photos, and an object; have pairs collect one fact from each about how seeds grow.
Ask, “Which source taught you something about penguins, and what did you learn?” Record each child’s answer on a class chart.
Play Source Match: students match fact cards to the book, picture, video clip, or classroom guest that provided each fact.
Plan a class snack by checking a recipe, food packages, and the cafeteria worker’s advice for ingredients and allergies.
