Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students choose a simple question and help decide how to find an answer. They follow ordered steps, gather relevant information, and revisit the plan with teacher support.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can state a simple question, choose a useful source, and put three or four steps in order. With teacher prompts, the student follows the steps and marks each one complete.
Common Misconceptions: Students may start collecting facts before naming a clear question. They may choose unrelated sources, skip steps, or think the plan cannot change.
How to Assess It: Give students picture cards labeled Ask, Look, Draw, and Share. Have them place the cards in order and explain how each step helps answer a question.

Lesson moves

Have pairs plan how to test which classroom material absorbs the most water, using picture cards for each research step.
Ask, "How could we find out what ants eat?" and create a class plan with words and drawings.
Play Research Plan Relay, where teams race to arrange Ask, Look, Record, and Share cards in a sensible order.
Plan how to learn which lunch choices create the least trash by observing bins, recording items, and sharing findings.
