What Students Need to Do: Students turn a broad topic into a focused question, then map out sources, steps, and deadlines. They use teacher feedback to adjust the plan as their research develops.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student creates a clear plan with a focused question, useful sources, ordered steps, and reasonable deadlines. The student follows the plan and revises it after a teacher conference when needed.
Common Misconceptions: Students may list facts they hope to find instead of writing a focused research question. They may name only one source, skip deadlines, or treat the plan as fixed when the question changes.
How to Assess It: Use this exit ticket: Plan research on how weather affects one Texas animal. Include a focused question, two source types, three steps, and one point for an adult check.

Lesson moves

Give pairs cards labeled question, source, notes, and deadline, then have them arrange the cards into a workable research sequence.
Ask students to write: What will I learn, where will I look, and what will I finish first?
Play Plan Repair: teams find one missing or unrealistic step in a sample plan and replace it.
Plan a class research project comparing three local field trip sites, including sources, jobs, and a completion date.
