What Students Need to Do: Students ask questions to learn more about an object, picture, event, or topic. With adult help, they use question words and keep their questions connected to the inquiry.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a picture, object, or shared topic, the student asks one or more related questions with a teacher prompt. The student uses words such as who, what, where, when, why, or how.
Common Misconceptions: Students may give a fact, guess, or comment instead of asking a question. They may ask unrelated questions or repeat a classmate’s question without connecting it to the topic.
How to Assess It: Show a photo of an ant carrying food. Ask each student to dictate one question that could help the class learn more about the ant.

Lesson moves

Place a mystery object in a bag, let students feel it, then record their questions about what it might be.
Show a playground photo and ask, “What would you like to find out about what is happening here?”
Give pairs question-word cards and topic cards, then have them create a matching question for each turn.
Before a visit from the school nurse, help students prepare questions about staying healthy.
