What Students Need to Do: Students ask clear questions to learn more about a topic, text, object, or event. With teacher support, they revise broad questions into focused ones that can guide inquiry.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students generate several clear, relevant questions about a topic, text, image, or experience. They use adult prompts to narrow broad questions and identify which ones need research.
Common Misconceptions: Students may write statements instead of questions or forget the question mark. They may ask questions that are too broad, unrelated, or answered with one word.
How to Assess It: Show a photograph of an unfamiliar animal. Ask students to write three related questions, including one that would require research to answer.

Lesson moves

Place an unfamiliar object in a mystery bag, let students examine it, then record five questions on sticky notes.
Read a short book title and ask, “What would you want to learn before reading?” Students write two questions.
Play Question Sort by having pairs sort cards into research questions, quick-answer questions, and statements.
Plan a class pet inquiry by listing questions students would ask a veterinarian about food, habitat, health, and care.
