What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students listen closely, ask questions that clear up confusion, and answer with more than one word. They follow, repeat, and give short sequences of oral directions. They share on-topic ideas, use discussion rules, build on others’ comments, and tell the difference between asking and telling.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students follow and repeat a short sequence of oral directions in the correct order. During a discussion, they speak clearly, stay on topic, wait their turn, and connect their comments to others. They ask useful questions and answer with complete phrases.

Common Misconceptions

Students may ask unrelated questions or answer with one word instead of a clear phrase. They may skip steps when repeating directions or speak too quickly. Some confuse asking for information with telling information, or interrupt instead of building on a classmate’s idea.

How to Assess It

Say, "Pick up a pencil, draw a circle, and place the pencil beside your paper." Have each student complete and restate the steps, then ask and answer one related question with a partner.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use paper shapes and three-step oral directions, then have partners check the completed arrangement and restate the steps.

  2. Ask pairs to discuss which class pet would suit the room, then respond by adding one related idea.

  3. Play Ask or Tell: read sentence cards, sort each as a question or statement, then revise unclear examples.

  4. Have students explain the lunch cleanup routine to a new student using clear, ordered steps.
