KL4 is a cluster heading. These are the individual standards under it.

• KL4.a

  Identify new meanings for familiar words and apply them accurately (e.g., knowing duck is a bird and learning the verb to duck).

• KL4.b

  Use the most frequently occurring inflections and affixes (e.g., -ed, -s, re-, un-, pre-, -ful, -less) as a clue to the meaning of a word.

What Students Need to Do

Students explore new words and familiar words with more than one meaning during real conversations, play, and reading. They use common endings and beginnings to help understand how a word changes.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can use a new word appropriately in an authentic situation. The student can show two meanings of a familiar word and notice how a common affix changes meaning or time.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume a familiar word always has the same meaning. They may repeat a new word correctly without understanding it or overlook the meaning carried by an ending.

How to Assess It

Show pictures for two meanings of duck and ask the student to use each meaning in a sentence. Then ask what -ed changes in jumped.

   Use objects and picture cards to act out two meanings of familiar words such as wave, bat, and ring.

   Ask, ‘What could this word mean here, and what in our play or story helped you know?’

3. 03

   Play Affix Actions by adding -s, -ed, or re- to action cards and acting out the changed meaning.

   Collect new words during a classroom job, then use each word while completing the real task.
