What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students acquire and accurately use academic and subject-specific vocabulary. They apply vocabulary knowledge when a word or phrase affects comprehension or precise expression.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student uses a new term correctly in discussion and writing. When meaning is unclear, the student draws on known word parts, relationships, context, or references.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may insert formal vocabulary without understanding its meaning or grammar. They may skip an important unfamiliar term even when it blocks comprehension.
How to Assess It
- Give students three recent academic or content terms and a short prompt. Ask them to explain the topic using all three accurately.
