What Students Need to Do
- Students learn and accurately use academic and subject-specific vocabulary. They use transition words and phrases to signal contrast, addition, and other logical relationships.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student selects precise vocabulary and uses transitions such as however, similarly, or moreover correctly. Each signal matches the relationship between ideas.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add formal transitions that do not fit the logic. They may overuse one connector or confuse contrast with addition.
How to Assess It
- Give two related ideas and four transition choices. Ask students to join the ideas with the best transition and explain the relationship.
