What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students acquire and accurately use academic and subject-specific vocabulary. They apply vocabulary knowledge when a key term affects comprehension or precise expression.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student uses new terms correctly in varied contexts and explains important distinctions. The student notices an unfamiliar key phrase, determines its meaning, and applies it in analysis.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy technical language without understanding it. They may rely on a vague synonym that removes an important disciplinary distinction.
How to Assess It
- Give a short subject-area excerpt with two key terms. Ask students to explain the terms in context and use both in a concise response.
