What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students independently acquire and accurately use general academic and content-specific vocabulary across reading, writing, speaking, and listening. They recognize when a word matters to comprehension or expression and pursue its meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student notices a consequential unknown term, selects effective learning strategies, and records a precise contextual meaning. The student later uses the word accurately across more than one mode or subject setting.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may memorize isolated definitions without understanding usage or skip unfamiliar words that carry an argument's key distinction. They may use advanced vocabulary inaccurately to sound formal.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to select one important unfamiliar term from a current text. Require an evidence-based definition and accurate use in written and spoken explanations.
