What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students acquire and accurately use academic and subject-specific vocabulary. They apply vocabulary knowledge when a key word or phrase matters for understanding or expression.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student uses new terms precisely across speaking and writing. The student identifies an important unfamiliar term, determines its meaning, and applies it correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use technical terms as decoration without understanding them. They may ignore a key word and guess at the larger passage meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give a brief content-area paragraph with one central unfamiliar term. Ask students to infer, verify, and use the term in an accurate explanation.
