What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students discover that a familiar word can have a new meaning in a different authentic situation. They identify the intended meaning and use it accurately while speaking, playing, drawing, or acting.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can show two meanings of a familiar word such as duck, wave, or ring. The student uses each meaning correctly in a simple sentence or action.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume a familiar word always names the same object or action. They may copy a new use without connecting it to the situation that gives it meaning.

How to Assess It

Show one picture of a duck and one person ducking. Ask the student to explain and act out both meanings, then use duck accurately.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use paired objects, pictures, and action cards to act out two meanings of familiar words.

  2. Ask, ‘What does wave mean in this picture, and how could we show its other meaning?’

  3. Play Same Word, New Meaning by matching one word card to two different picture or action cards.

  4. Notice multiple-meaning words during classroom jobs and use each meaning while completing the real activity.
