What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students adjust language for context, meaning, style, audience, and purpose when writing, reading, speaking, or listening. They also edit discipline-specific work using an appropriate recognized style manual.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain how wording or syntax changes a passage's effect and revise it for a different context. The student consistently applies the chosen manual's rules for format, citations, usage, and mechanics.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat style as decoration rather than a set of choices tied to meaning and audience. They may mix citation systems, apply one discipline's conventions everywhere, or correct mechanics without considering effect.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph with an audience mismatch and two style-manual errors. Ask them to revise all three problems and explain the language choice.
