What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write and edit according to a recognized style manual suited to the discipline and writing type. They apply its rules consistently to formatting, source documentation, mechanics, and usage.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student identifies the appropriate style guide and follows its relevant conventions throughout a piece. The student can locate a rule, apply it accurately, and correct inconsistencies during editing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may mix citation and formatting systems or treat a remembered convention as universal. They may correct surface appearance while overlooking the guide's rules for documentation, capitalization, or usage.
How to Assess It
- Give students a paragraph and source entry containing four violations of one assigned style guide. Ask them to correct each violation and cite the relevant rule.
