What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine models and data, then ask questions that clarify how DNA, genes, chromosomes, and inherited traits are related. They trace genetic information from parents to offspring without describing meiosis phases or detailed biochemical steps.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can explain that chromosomes contain DNA and that genes are sections of DNA linked to inherited traits. Given a model or data table, they ask focused questions about how genetic information connects parents, offspring, and traits.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use DNA, gene, and chromosome as if they mean the same thing. They may think each trait comes from one gene, dominant means stronger, or offspring receive all traits directly from one parent.
How to Assess It
- Show a parent and offspring chromosome diagram beside a trait table. Ask students to write two questions that would clarify how the DNA shown relates to the offspring’s trait.
