HS-LS3-1
The standard
Ask questions to clarify relationships about the role of DNA and chromosomes in coding the instructions for characteristic traits passed from parents to offspring.
Next Generation Science Standards
What this standard means
Students need to connect DNA, genes, chromosomes, and traits. They should ask clear questions about how instructions are stored, copied, and passed from parents to offspring. They do not need the detailed steps of meiosis or DNA chemistry.
Mastery looks like students explaining that genes are sections of DNA on chromosomes, and that offspring inherit chromosome sets from parents. They can ask testable or clarifying questions using a model or data. Common sticking points include thinking one gene controls every trait, mixing up chromosomes and genes, or assuming inherited traits always appear visibly.
Ways to teach it
- Have students build chromosome models with colored paper strips, marking genes and tracing which parent each chromosome came from.
- Use the prompt, “How can two parents without a visible trait have a child who shows it?” and require two clarifying questions.
- Give a four-term card sort with DNA, gene, chromosome, and trait, then ask students to draw arrows showing relationships.
- Connect to family health history forms, and discuss why doctors ask about relatives without predicting exact outcomes for every trait.
