What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use maps, data, and case studies to explain why people settle, move, farm, mine, or rebuild in particular places. They connect resource access, hazards, and climate shifts to specific human choices.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can make a clear claim about how an environmental factor shaped settlement, migration, farming, or industry. They support the claim with relevant evidence and explain the link between the evidence and human decisions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think natural resources only mean fuels and minerals, not fresh water or fertile soil. They may assume hazards always force people to leave or confuse long-term climate patterns with single weather events. They may also treat a map pattern as proof without explaining cause and effect.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A coastal county lost 15 percent of its farmland after repeated saltwater flooding, and 20 percent of residents moved inland. Explain how the environmental change influenced human activity, citing both figures.

Ways to Teach It
Layer transparent maps of freshwater, fertile soil, earthquake risk, and population density, then mark two likely settlement sites and justify each choice.
Write a claim explaining why people remain near an active volcano, using fertile soil and eruption risk as evidence.
