HS-ESS3-1

ScienceGrades 9–12Earth and Human Activity

The standard

Construct an explanation based on evidence for how the availability of natural resources, occurrence of natural hazards, and changes in climate have influenced human activity.

Next Generation Science Standards

What this standard means

Students need to explain how people choose where to live, farm, trade, build cities, or move based on resources, hazards, and climate patterns. They should use evidence from maps, data tables, case studies, or historical examples, not just opinions or general claims.

Mastery looks like a clear cause and effect explanation with specific evidence, such as rainfall data linked to crop choices or earthquake risk linked to building rules. Students often get stuck making vague statements like “climate affects people” without naming the resource, hazard, data pattern, or human response.

Ways to teach it

  • Have students overlay maps of population density, rivers, fertile soil, fault lines, and mineral deposits, then mark three patterns they notice.
  • Ask students to write a claim explaining why one city grew where it did, using two pieces of map or data evidence.
  • Show a short case study and ask students to identify the resource, hazard, climate factor, human activity, and evidence in a five-box chart.
  • Connect to local planning by having students check a FEMA flood map or drought monitor and list one way it affects building or farming decisions.
