The standard

Obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth's resources and environment.

Next Generation Science Standards

What this standard means

Students need to gather information from more than one source about how communities protect water, air, land, plants, animals, or energy resources. They should connect each action to a science idea, such as filtration, erosion control, recycling, renewable energy, habitat needs, or pollution prevention.

Mastery looks like a clear explanation that names the resource, the problem, the community action, and the science behind it. Students often list “helping the Earth” actions without explaining how they work. They may also confuse personal habits with community plans, so push for examples like city composting, beach cleanups, water treatment, or tree planting programs.

Ways to teach it

  • Hands-on activity: Build a simple water filter with gravel, sand, cotton, and a cup, then compare it to local water treatment steps.
  • Discussion or writing prompt: Choose one community action and explain what resource it protects, what problem it solves, and what science idea makes it work.
  • Quick assessment: Give students three short community examples and have them match each one to the protected resource and the science idea used.
  • Real-world connection: Show a local recycling, storm drain, park restoration, or water conservation page and have students identify the problem and solution.
