Next Generation Science Standards
What this standard means
Students need to use science ideas about energy transfer to build a simple device, test how well it works, and improve it. They should be able to name the energy forms involved, such as stored energy, motion, light, sound, heat, or electrical energy.
Mastery looks like a working device, clear test results, and a specific improvement based on evidence. Students often get stuck describing what happens without naming the energy change. They may also want to change too many variables at once, or rebuild randomly instead of using test data.
Ways to teach it
- Build a rubber band car, test distance traveled, then change one feature such as wheel size or rubber band wraps.
- Write: What energy form did your device start with, what did it change into, and what evidence proves it?
- Use an exit ticket showing three devices, and ask students to label the energy input, output, and one possible improvement.
- Connect to flashlights, doorbells, toy cars, and solar calculators by sorting each by the energy conversion it uses.
