Make observations to construct an evidence-based account of how an object made of a small set of pieces can be disassembled and made into a new object.

What this standard means
Students need to take apart an object made from smaller pieces, notice what pieces they have, and use those same pieces to build something new. They should describe what changed and what stayed the same, using observations as evidence.
Mastery looks like a student saying, “I used the same 12 blocks. First they made a bridge, then I made a tower.” Students often get stuck by focusing only on the new object, not the evidence that the pieces are the same. Some may need help counting, sorting, or naming pieces before and after building.
Ways to teach it
- Give pairs 10 building bricks to make a chair, take it apart, then use the same bricks to make a vehicle.
- Ask students to write or tell, “How do you know your new object used the same pieces?”
- Show two photos of a student's before and after build, then ask students to circle evidence that the pieces match.
- Connect to a sandwich cut into pieces, then rearranged on a plate to show the food is still the same material.
