The standard

Make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties.

Next Generation Science Standards

What this standard means

Students need to observe and measure physical properties, then use evidence to identify an unknown material. They should test things like color, hardness, shine, magnetism, electrical conductivity, heat transfer, and solubility. They should record results clearly and compare them to known samples or a property chart.

Mastery looks like choosing useful tests, using tools safely, and explaining an identification with data, not guesses. Common trouble spots are relying only on appearance, mixing up solubility with melting, or saying “it looks like” without evidence. Keep density, mass versus weight, and advanced calculations out of it.

Ways to teach it

  • Set up mystery powder cups with salt, sugar, baking soda, and cornstarch, then have students test color, texture, and solubility in water.
  • Ask students to write: Which two tests gave you the strongest evidence for your material, and why?
  • Give each team one unknown metal object and a checklist for magnetism, shine, hardness, and electrical conductivity.
  • Connect to recycling by having students sort sample materials using magnetism, shine, and conductivity like workers sorting metals and plastics.

  • MS-PS1-2

Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred.

  • 2-PS1-2
