What this standard means

Students need to observe living things in more than one habitat and compare what they notice. They should use drawings, counts, simple charts, and spoken or written observations to show that different places have different kinds of plants and animals.

Mastery looks like a student saying, “The pond had more water animals, but the schoolyard had more insects and plants,” and backing it with observations. Students often get stuck naming animals instead of comparing groups, or thinking one quick look shows everything that lives there.

Ways to teach it

  • Place hoops on grass, soil, and near a tree, then have students draw and tally the living things they observe in each spot.
  • Ask, “How are the living things in these two habitats alike and different?” using two class observation charts as evidence.
  • Show two habitat photos and have students circle living things, then write one comparison sentence about the variety in each.
  • Compare a playground, garden, and puddle after rain, and discuss why different living things might live in each place.
