Develop a model to represent the shapes and kinds of land and bodies of water in an area.

What this standard means

Students need to make a simple model that shows landforms and bodies of water in one place. They should include shapes such as hills, mountains, valleys, plains, rivers, lakes, ponds, and oceans. The model can be a drawing, clay map, paper map, or block model. It does not need exact scale.

Mastery looks like a model with clear parts, labels, and a short explanation of what each part represents. Students often mix up landforms and water features, draw a flat picture with no shape clues, or forget that the model represents a real area, not an imaginary scene.

Ways to teach it

  • Have students build a clay tray map with hills, valleys, a river, and a lake, then label each feature with sticky flags.
  • Ask students to write: How does your model show where the land is high, low, wet, and dry?
  • Show a photo of a landscape, then have students sketch and label three land features and two water features from it.
  • Use a local park map or town map to find nearby hills, streams, ponds, or other land and water features.
