K-2-ETS1-2
The standard
Develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem.
Next Generation Science Standards
What this standard means
Students need to show how form connects to function. They should use a sketch, drawing, or simple model to explain why a shape helps an object do its job. The focus is not perfect art. The focus is clear thinking about a problem and a design choice.
Mastery looks like a student saying, “I made it wide so it will not tip,” or “I curved it so it can scoop.” Students often get stuck drawing the whole object with no explanation, copying a familiar item, or choosing shapes because they look nice instead of because they help solve the problem.
Ways to teach it
- Give students foil, paper, and tape to build a small boat that holds 10 pennies, then draw the shape that helped it float.
- Ask students to write: What shape did you choose, and how does that shape help your object solve the problem?
- Show two spoon drawings, flat and scooped, and ask students to circle the better design and explain why in one sentence.
- Bring in a mitten, spoon, cup, and wheel, then have students match each shape to the job it helps do.
