The standard

Use materials to design a solution to a human problem by mimicking how plants and/or animals use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs.

Next Generation Science Standards

What this standard means

Students need to notice how plant and animal body parts help them live, then use that idea to solve a simple human problem. They should connect form to function, like shells protect, roots hold steady, thorns keep things away, or ears detect sound.

Mastery looks like a child saying, “A turtle shell protects, so my helmet needs a hard outside,” then building and explaining a model with classroom materials. Students often copy an animal part without explaining the job it does, or they build something fun that does not solve the problem.

Ways to teach it

  • Hands-on: Give teams foil, cups, cardboard, and tape to build a bike helmet model inspired by shells, then test it with a plastic egg.
  • Prompt: Choose one plant or animal part, explain its job, and describe one human tool that could copy that job.
  • Quick assessment: Show pictures of a cactus, duck feet, and a turtle, then ask students to match each to a human problem.
  • Real-world connection: Bring in a raincoat, Velcro, or bike helmet and discuss which plant or animal feature it reminds students of.
