What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use income to build a budget that balances needs, wants, and savings. They explain how saving prepares for future costs and how debt can increase both buying power and financial risk.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a monthly income and a list of expenses, a student can make a balanced budget and adjust it for an unexpected cost. The student can justify a savings choice and identify the risks of borrowing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think budgets are only for people with low incomes or that saving means keeping whatever money remains. They may treat credit as extra income or assume a low monthly payment makes debt affordable.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Jordan earns $1,200 monthly and spends $1,150. Recommend one budget change, one savings goal, and one debt risk to avoid. Explain each choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs income cards and expense slips, then have them build a monthly budget, include savings, and revise it after drawing an emergency card.
Prompt students to explain why someone with steady income still needs a budget, naming two benefits and one spending tradeoff.
Run a card sort where teams label choices as saving, planned spending, or risky debt, then defend each placement.
Have students compare the total cost of buying a phone with cash versus a credit plan using a sample bill.
