What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students compare earnings with planned spending and make choices that prevent overspending. They explain how needs, wants, savings, and unexpected costs affect a budget.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a monthly income and a list of expenses, a student can total both, identify a surplus or shortfall, and revise spending. The student can justify which costs to keep, reduce, or delay.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume a purchase is affordable whenever cash or credit is available. They may leave savings and irregular costs out of a budget, or confuse income with money already in an account.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: You have A$120 of income, A$95 in required expenses, and want A$40 shoes. Decide if the plan works and revise it.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs A$500 in play money and expense cards, then have them build a budget and adjust it after drawing a surprise-cost card.

  2. Ask students to defend one cut from an over-budget plan: streaming, takeout, new shoes, bus fare, or medicine.

  3. Play Budget Match: students pair income cards with expense sets, then label each plan surplus, balanced, or shortfall.

  4. Use an Australian supermarket flyer and transit fares to plan one day in Sydney on A$60, including food, travel, and savings.
