What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify pay as money earned by doing a job. They explain that a worker receives a set amount and must keep spending within that amount.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given hours worked and an hourly rate, students can find the total pay. They can explain why spending cannot exceed the money earned without borrowing or saving first.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat an hourly rate as the total pay. They may think credit cards create extra income or that workers can always earn more immediately. Some confuse wants with required expenses.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: Mia works 8 hours at A$15 per hour. How much does she earn, and can she buy A$150 headphones using only that pay?

Ways to Teach It

  1. Pairs draw a job card, calculate weekly pay, collect wage tokens, then choose expense cards without spending more tokens than they earned.

  2. Ask students to write a response to: Why does a worker's pay place limits on what the worker can buy?

  3. Play Paycheck Challenge, where teams calculate earnings from job cards and reject purchases that exceed each worker's available pay.

  4. Show an Australian job listing with an hourly rate, then have students calculate earnings for a sample weekly work schedule.
