What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how a worker earns money through a job. They use a fixed pay amount to decide what can and cannot be purchased.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a weekly pay amount and a list of expenses, a student keeps total spending at or below the pay amount. The student explains why earning money does not allow unlimited spending.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a paycheck provides enough money for every want. They may also confuse income with borrowed money, gifts, or the total amount available on a credit card.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “Jordan earns $90 this week and wants items costing $35, $40, and $25. Can Jordan buy all three? Explain.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 20 income tokens and expense cards, then have them choose purchases without spending more than 20 tokens.
Write: Why can a worker with a steady job still be unable to buy everything they want?
Play Paycheck Limits: students draw job cards and race to build a spending plan that stays within the listed pay.
Compare two local job ads, calculate weekly earnings from hours and pay rates, then list what each income could cover.
