What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Explain why people set aside part of their income instead of spending it all. Connect saving to emergencies, planned purchases, future goals, and avoiding debt.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given an income and a list of expenses, students can choose a reasonable amount to save and defend their choice. They can explain how regular saving provides security and helps pay for future goals.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think saving is only possible after every want is paid for, or only for people with high incomes. They may confuse saving with never spending money. They may assume money in any savings account grows quickly or has no fees.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Maya earns $40 and wants headphones that cost $90. Name two benefits of saving $10 each week instead of borrowing or spending it now.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs $100 in play money, labeled spending and savings envelopes, then draw an unexpected expense card and revise their choices.

  2. Write: Would you save for a phone, an emergency, or both, and what would you give up now?

  3. Run a goal-card match where students pair savings goals with realistic monthly plans and explain why each plan works.

  4. Compare two local bank savings account pages, then identify one benefit, one fee to check, and one question to ask.
